- 8021XConfig Module
File extensions exe : The EXE executable (program) file
An executable file is a program that can be executed on the various Microsoft operating systems (Dos,windows 98/xp/vista).
What is 1xconfig.exe?
This is the 8021XConfig Module. It is a module that is by Intel wireless cards as well as for various Shuttle Technology (SCM Microsystems) products. It is installed with Intel wireless drivers, as well as with Shuttle Technology drivers. As many pre-built systems include products made by Shuttle Technology (e.g., card readers), many pre-built systems will have this process.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, it may be necessary for the proper functioning of your Intel wireless or any Shuttle devices in your system. If it causes problems for you and you wish to disable it, you can try disabling it, taking note of the aforementioned potential caveats.
Dangers of 1xconfig
As this is a legitimate process that is installed on many systems with Intel wireless or with Shuttle devices, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%IntelWirelessin. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection.
